Gliese 581d - First Earth-Like Planet?

That's right. We've all been waiting for it and it's finally here.
A planet that in theory - can house people! It's called the Gliese 581d, it's about double the size and seven times the mass of Earth and the temperature is just right, because water doesn't vaporize nor does it freeze!

There is a chance a human-like species already live there, but I don't think anyone will ever find out. You want to know why? It'll take us roughly 300.000 years to reach it, being 20 lightyears away. Yeah, I know it sucks. :)

If we ever DO get there, it will really weird. The denser air and thick clouds would keep the surface in a constant murky red twilight. And thanks to it's mass (no offense Gliese) surface gravity is double  Earth's.

And to people still rooting that one day we will reach it:

Not a chance.

If we could find a way to boost our spaceships into travelling at close-to-lightspeed..getting there would still take more then 20 years!

  1. Well 20 years wouldn't be too bad really, you could send large colonies that could reproduce in that time. Think it could be a while of yet though!
Would we be able to survive in 7 times gravity? Sounds like quite a lot.

  2. I hope I get to stand on another planet before I die.

  3. You gotta admit though, if we do figure out light travel, 20 years would be worth it.

  4. Think how easy this would be with portals!

  5. We shat this planet... I would hate humans to spread on another planet.

  6. Very interesting! I love everything related with the space exploration :)

  7. Plenty of "earth-like planets" have been discovered, and it makes you wonder how there could not be some other planet somewhere in the universe that isn't actually similar to us.

  8. I've read about this before and there is a lot of skeptism about its chance's of supporting life but as our searching methods get better we're bound to find a planet almost identical to earth. What we do with that information however, heavens knows.

  9. I do believe that there are other species living around the universe, but I don't think that there are humans out there... Interesting post!

  10. Personally i don't think there is any life on that planet.

  11. If we achieve Lightspeed, then I 20 year investment to find another livable planet would not be hard to accept. The technology alone to reach that speed would be more than an investment of 20 years to get someone out there. The big problem would be communicating back to Earth your findings. We still do not have the means to broadcast something faster than light... and unlike lightspeed travel I do not know of theories on how to communicate across those distances.

  12. I think it would be plausible to suggest that there are life forms out there more advanced than ourselves. We may even be due to a visit by them.

  13. That would be so amazing! I wish it could happen in our lifetime! +1 follower!

  14. You have to remember that if we were traveling at close-to-speed-of-light speeds, then due to relativity (theory), time would be much faster for us(the ones traveling) then the people on earth. It wouldn't be twenty years of aging at the same rate for the us, so all it all, Worth it. (Subbed)

  15. Well, this is probably one of the closest Earth-like planets in the universe. There must be millions of planets that could sustain human-like life, but we will not know about it.

  16. I was thinking about things like this the other day...I really hope I get to see another planet first hand in my lifetime.

  17. so awesome. i bet theres is life on the planet

  18. watch it turn out to be a planet full of bacteria

  19. 20 years just to get there. and then dealing with all the differences there. hmm...

  20. 20 years of flying, sounds a bit like the flight to pandora in Avatar :)

  21. If you keep in mind how many planets are existing in the universe there is no doubt that there is another earth.

  22. 20 years are a long time,.. maybe we should build faster rockets :P

    BeantwoordenVerwijderen
  23. Very interesting though.
Why not build a big ship, let it fly to that planet on autopilot. It will be there in about 100 years. Launch anchors, pull planet closer to earth :)

    Easy?

  24. Thanks for crushing my hopes of going there

  25. Guys, you're screwing it up! It's 20 lightyears away, that's 300 000 years away.

  26. Let's hope my great great great grandkids get a chance to live there

  27. still cool that they found a planet simialr to earths though

  28. Have you heard about 'Thousand Year' space program? It's a daring idea to send people to Mars in order to transform it into an Earth-like planet.
